One man is in hospital and two teenage girls are in custody following a high-speed police chase through the Fraser Valley Tuesday afternoon, said police.

Const. Casey Vinet with the Abbotsford Police Department said a stolen late-model Honda Civic managed to evade several police cruisers for more than 20 kilometres on Highway 1 even after a spike belt was laid down near the Mt. Lehman exit.

The driver, a 21-year-old male from Abbotsford who is known to police, was able to drive the damaged vehicle just south of the Golden Ears Bridge on 200 Street in Langley before the car lost a front wheel and came to a grinding halt.

The suspect then exited the Civic and attempted to escape on foot, and was injured when police arrested him, said Vinet.

“The male driver tried to jump over one of the officers’ vehicles in an attempt to get away and was pursued on foot and taken into custody.

“That being said, he’s been taken to an area hospital to receive treatment.”

Vinet said the incident unfolded around 3 p.m., when the driver refused to stop for a patrol member on Highway 1 near the McCallum Road exit and the officer initiated pursuit.

“The officer became aware of a distressed female in the back seat of the Civic,” said Vinet.

“She appeared to be in serious distress, so with concern for her safety he continued pursuit, called it in and other units joined [the chase].”

Vinet said investigators are questioning the two teens — who are both known to police — and said the two female passengers and the driver knew each other.

Police have learned the vehicle was stolen the day before from a repair shop in Abbotsford. Part of the investigation will determine if the teen girls (15 and 17 years) were being held against their will, police said in a statement. The girls were not injured.

The driver is expected to face numerous charges.
